Wash. U. men and women are No. 1

The Washington University men's and women's basketball teams were both tabbed as the preseason No. 1 team in the country by Division III news.
Both teams return four starters and a host of other letter winners from their respective teams that advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2009.
The Washington University men's team finished 29-2 and won their second consecutive national title. Coach Mark Edwards returns his top two players in guards Aaron Thomposon and Sean Wallis.
Thompson, who averaged 18 points a game, was also selected the Preseason Division III Player of the Year. Thompson was joined on the preseason All-American team by Wallis, a guard who averaged 11 points and eight assists a game.
The WU women's team finished 26-5 and finished second in the national tournament. Coach Nancy Fahey has led the Bears to four NCAA titles, including an 81-game winning streak during her career.
Washington University returns graduate student Jaimie McFarlin and seniors Janice Evans and Zoe Unruh.
The Bears made an early statement last weekend when they defeated Division I Southern Illinois University 84-74 in a preseason game in Carbondale. Unruh scored a game-high 21 points while Evans added 18 points and four assists.
