Early NAIA Showdown

McKendree University defeated Lindenwood University 73-62 in an early-season clash of nationally-ranked NAIA teams on Wednesday in Lebanon, Ill.
McKendree entered the contest ranked No. 2 in the preseason NAIA Division I poll while the Lions came in at No. 12. It was also the debut of Brad Soderberg as head coach at Lindenwood. Soderberg spent five seasons as the head coach at Saint Louis University.
Holding a slim 33-32 edge at halftime, the Bearcats broke the game open by holding LU scoreless for the first seven-in-a-half minutes of the second half.
The Bearcats (2-0) were led by a pair of former Cahokia Conference standouts. Forwards Ken Detmer (Breese Central) and Sean Rakers (Wesclin) led McKendree with 15 points each while guard Karrington Pettiford (CBC) chipped in with 14.
Richard Rose (Troy) led Lindenwood with a game-high 17 points.
The victory was No. 997 in the illustrious career of McKendree head coach Harry Statham. The all-time winningest coach in college basketball, Statham is only three wins shy of the magical 1,000-victory plateau.
