SLU opens with SEMO
Saint Louis University opens its regular season with a tilt against in-state opponent Southeast Missouri State tonight at the Chaifetz Arena. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Both teams are in a building stage and hoping for bigger and better things for the future. The Billikens are one of the youngest teams in NCAA Division I basketball with five freshman, one redshirt freshman and four sophomores on their 10-man roster.
SEMO is trying to rebuild its program after a 2-23 season a year ago and a NCAA probe which resulted in SEMO having to forfeit several victories over the past couple of seasons.
The man in charge of SEMO's rebuilding project is former Arkansas State head coach Dickie Nutt. Nutt has had his share of success at the Divison I level, having led the Indians to a couple of postseason bids during his time in Jonesboro, Ark.
Nutt has brought in 11 new players in the fold, including St. Louis products Sam Pearson (Hazelwood Central) and Leon Powell (Vashon). The 6'2" Pearson will start at guard for SEMO tonight while the 6'7" Powell is sitting out the season as a medical redshirt after tearing his anterior cruciate ligiment (ACL) during the summer.
It should make for an interesting time tonight at the Chaifetz.
I'll have a post-game wrap-up later tonight. See you at the game.
