Washington U. defeats McKendree in area college showdown
In a battle of area college powers, Washington University defeated McKendree University 84-69 in the first-round of the Lopata Classic Friday night at the Wash. U. Fieldhouse.
Washington University is the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division III while McKendree is ranked No. 5 in the NAIA standings.
Washington U. looked like they were going to run the Bearcats out of the building as they built a 47-22 halftime lead. However, McKendree cut the lead all the way down to four points, but that was as close as they got as the Bears held on to improve their record to 4-0.
Veteran guards Aaron Thompson and Sean Wallis did most of the damage for the Bears. Thompson scored a game-high 21 points while Wallis added 20 points. Caleb Knepper (13 points) and Zach Kelly (10 points) also scored in double figures for Washington U.
McKendree (8-3) was led by John Steppe's 19 points.
