Spoonball is back (sort of...)
I know what you're thinking. But no, Charlie Spoonhour is still enjoying retirement while doing a little television work.
However, his son, Jay Spoonhour has continued the family tradition of excellence on the sidelines with what he is doing at his latest gig at Moberly Area Community College.
J-Spoon has the Greyhounds out of the gate quickly with an 11-1 record. After dropping their first game, Moberly has won 11 consecutive games, including road victories at NJCAA national tournament participants Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) and Highland Junior College (Ill.).
The Greyhounds have been led this season by 6'8" freshman center Karron Johnson, who has been a beast in the post. The Richmond,Va. native was an Oklahoma State signee out of high school.
Spoonhour has made the most of his head coaching opportunities. He led Wabash Valley Junior College to the NJCAA national title in 2001. He also took over for his father in 2004when he stepped down and UNLV and led the Rebels to within a jump shot away from the Mountain West title and a NCAA tournament berth.
In between head coaching gigs, Spoonhour has been an assistant at Missouri and Texas San-Antonio.
Who knows what that Southeast Missouri program might have become had they hired Spoonhour as its head coach instead of the ill-fated hiring of Scott Edgar?
Something that make you go hmmmm.
Hey folks. The young man can coach. Hopefully, some Division I school will figure that out and give him a chance in the near future.
