Former Vashon standout sizzling on the West Coast
Former Vashon High standout Kenny Daniels has been on a tear to begin his senior season at Cal-State Northridge.
The 6'4" senior guard enjoyed a career night on Thursday in leading the Matadors to 95-93 victory over Idaho. Daniels scored a career high 39 points and added 10 rebounds. The 39 points was the most by a Cal-State Northridge player since 1967.
For the game, Daniels hit 12 of 17 from the field and 13 for 15 from the free throw line as he sparked a Matador rally from a 14-point deficit.
Last night's game is an prime example of how Daniels has continued to blossom as a top-flight collegiate player. He has continued to get better and better with each game he plays.
In seven games this season, Daniels is averaging a team-high 19.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and two assists while shooting 54 percent from the field. He is also emerging as the Matadors' go-to guy when they need a basket.
Daniels was a starting forward on Vashon's Class 5 state-championship team in 2006. After a two-year junior college stint at Sheridan College, Daniels became a starter as a junior for the Matadors. He averaged nine points a game in helping the Matadors to the Big West Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He was voted the team's Most Improved Player at the end of the 2009 season.
Daniels scored 14 points in the Matadors' first-round loss to Memphis in Kansas City. Playing before many family and friends who made the short trip from St. Louis, Daniels and his Matador teammates gave the top-seeded Tigers quite a scare as they nearly pulled off the shocking first-round upset.
